Full rules

  • Photos must be 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high.
  • The height of your face, from your chin to your crown, must be 32–36 mm.
  • You must include 2 good-quality photos with your application.
  • Photos must be less than 6 months old.
  • Photos must be good-quality colour prints produced using dye sublimation (not an inkjet printer), on heavy-weight glossy paper of at least 200 gsm.
  • A plain white or light grey background that contrasts with your face.
  • Photos must not have any retouching, such as removing moles, wrinkles or scars — and an edited, non-plain background is listed as unacceptable.
  • Anyone over 3 years old must face the camera straight on, with eyes open and a neutral expression, head not tilted.
  • You must not wear glasses unless you cannot remove them for medical reasons. Poor vision alone is not an acceptable reason.
  • Religious head coverings are allowed if plain and without patterns, showing your entire face from the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead.
  • Hearing aids may be worn; AirPods and other wireless earbuds must be removed.
  • The Australian Passport Office states that it does not recommend using an online passport photo service or a mobile app, as these may put you in danger of identity fraud.

Questions

What size is an Australian passport photo?
35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with the height of your face from chin to crown measuring 32–36 mm. Note the size is a permitted range rather than a single fixed size.
Does the Australian Passport Office recommend online passport photo services?
No, and we would rather tell you than hide it. The APO states: “We do not recommend using an online passport photo service or a mobile app. These may put you in danger of identity fraud.” We keep your photo only long enough to produce the result — deleted within 6 hours if you do not buy, 72 hours if you do — and never use it for anything else. Read our privacy policy and decide for yourself.
Can I submit an Australian passport photo digitally?
No. Australia requires 2 printed photos with your application, produced using dye sublimation on heavy-weight glossy paper of at least 200 gsm. What we give you is a correctly sized file to have printed, not a file you can upload.
Can I wear glasses in an Australian passport photo?
Only if you cannot remove them for medical reasons. Poor vision alone is not an acceptable reason.
Can the photo be retouched?
No. Photos must not have any retouching, such as removing moles, wrinkles or scars, and an edited or non-plain background is listed as unacceptable.

Our own assumptions

  • The official size is a range (35–40 mm wide by 45–50 mm high). We output at the lower end, 35×45 mm, which is our choice within the permitted range.
  • Australia has no digital submission channel — two printed photos are required, on dye-sublimation prints on 200 gsm glossy paper. What we produce is a correctly sized file for you to have printed, not a file you can upload.
  • The official 32–36 mm head range allows only ±5.9%, the tightest of any specification we support. We target 33.9 mm so the ±5% landmark error band (32.3–35.7 mm) fits inside it. If no face is detected and we fall back to an outline estimate (±15%), the head-size check reports a warning rather than a pass.
  • ⚠️ The Australian Passport Office says it does not recommend online passport photo services. We quote that in full on this page rather than hide it — decide for yourself.
  • The chin is measured by 68-point facial landmarks; the crown comes from the top of the cut-out outline. Assumed accuracy ±5%, calibrated only on synthetic fixtures.
Where the authority does not specify something, we say so rather than pretending it does. The points above are our engineering choices, not official requirements.
