- Head length from the crown — the top of the head excluding hair — to the chin must be between 3.2 and 3.6 cm.

What are the Korean passport photo requirements?
A colour, front-facing photo taken within 6 months, 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm, on a uniform white background with no border. The head, measured from the crown excluding hair down to the chin, must be between 3.2 and 3.6 cm.
What size does the online passport renewal upload need?
413 by 531 pixels is the recommended size — and the only sizes accepted at all are widths of 395–431 px and heights of 507–550 px, as JPG/JPEG at 500 KB or less. We output exactly 413 x 531, which is also precisely 3.5 x 4.5 cm at 300 dpi.
Can I retouch or filter my Korean passport photo?
No. Photos arbitrarily corrected with photo-editing programs or filters are not accepted, and the ministry spells out that this includes anything edited, processed, synthesised or created with AI. Photos whose face has been squashed or stretched are also rejected.
Can I reuse the photo from my ID card or driving licence?
Only if it was taken within 6 months of this application. If a passport is found to have been issued with an older reused photo, it can be confiscated.
How does Korea measure head length?
From the crown — defined as the top of the head excluding hair — to the chin. Our tool measures from the top of the cut-out outline, which includes hair, so for tall hairstyles we run conservative. Check the guide lines on the preview.
What happens if my upload keeps failing?
If photo-quality or face-comparison failures exceed 10 within 24 hours, online submission locks for 24 hours from the last failure — so it is worth getting the photo right before you start.
Our own assumptions
- The Ministry publishes these requirements in Korean only. The rules above are our English rendering; the original Korean is kept verbatim in our source record, and that original is what governs.
- ⚠️ Korea measures head length from the crown excluding hair. Our crown detection uses the top of the cut-out outline, which includes hair — so for voluminous hairstyles we measure a taller head than the official method and position conservatively. Check the crown guide line on the preview if you have high hair.
- Head height is laid out at 34.0 mm, the centre of the official 32–36 mm. Korea's ±5.9% tolerance is as tight as Japan's, so if facial landmarks are not detected the fallback estimate cannot guarantee the official range and we say so.
- We output exactly 413 × 531 px — the recommended upload size, which is also precisely 35 × 45 mm at 300 dpi — and never scale beyond the official 431 px upload cap.
- The chin is measured by 68-point facial landmarks; the crown comes from the top of the cut-out outline. Assumed accuracy ±5%, calibrated only on synthetic fixtures.
Where the authority does not specify something, we say so rather than pretending it does. The points above are our engineering choices, not official requirements.
