About PhotoExact

What it does

You upload a photograph and choose a document. PhotoExact measures the photograph against the specification the issuing authority has published for that document — dimensions, head size and position, background, resolution, file size — and lays it out to the exact geometry that specification requires. Checking your photo and seeing the finished result are free; downloading the full-resolution file costs US$3.99.

It currently covers 33 document types across 27 countries and regions, with the interface available in 22 languages.

Where the numbers come from

Every figure on this site is taken from the issuing authority’s own published page or PDF — never from another photo site. On each document page we show the authority’s own wording, quoted in its original language, together with the source link and the date we last checked it. Most sites paraphrase the rules; a paraphrase is where errors creep in, and it gives you nothing to check us against.

Where an authority has simply not published a figure, we say so on the page rather than borrowing a plausible number from another country. An unpublished requirement is a fact about the specification, and hiding it would make the check look more complete than it is.

What we will not do to your photograph

• We do not replace or repair your background. Both the U.S. Department of State and HM Passport Office require an unaltered photograph and reject photographs edited with software or AI. Where a specification carries that restriction, a non-compliant background means we tell you to retake the photo — not that we paint a new one behind you.
• We do not stretch or squeeze your photograph to make it fit. Cropping and scaling are what the authorities’ own photo tools do; distorting the proportions of a face is something they name as a reason for rejection.
• We do not sell you a photo that failed a check. If a requirement we can measure is not met, no purchase button appears at all. A refund and a rejected application cost you far more than the price of the file.

What the check cannot tell you

Our checks cover measurable properties. They cannot judge expression, lighting quality, resemblance, dress, or anything else that requires human assessment, and the issuing authority remains the sole judge of whether your photo is acceptable. A result of “pass” means your photograph satisfied the checks we ran — see the Terms of Service for what that does and does not promise.

Your photograph

Your photo is used to produce your ID photo and nothing else. It is deleted automatically within 6 hours if you do not buy and within 72 hours if you do. There are no accounts, no profiles, no training on your photograph, and no third-party scripts on these pages. The details are in the Privacy Policy.
