Full rules

  • A recent colour photo of the face, 32 x 26 mm (height x width), against a uniform, white, smooth background.
  • Taken from the front, without dark-lensed glasses or any garment that could prevent identification.
  • The photo must clearly show the oval of the face — eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and chin — in high resolution on good-quality photographic paper.
  • No photo is needed if you obtained or renewed your DNI the same day — the passport reuses the DNI image.
  • Passports are issued in person at authorised National Police documentation offices; the photo is handed in with the application.

Questions

What are the Spanish passport photo requirements?
A recent colour photo of the face, 32 x 26 mm — height by width — on a uniform, white, smooth background, taken from the front, without dark-lensed glasses or anything preventing identification, clearly showing the oval of the face: eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and chin.
Is 32 x 26 really smaller than other passports?
Yes — it is the smallest print we cover, and the official wording is height by width: 26 mm wide, 32 mm tall. A 35 x 45 photo will not fit, which is why we lay out to the Spanish size.
Do I always need a photo?
No — if you obtained or renewed your DNI the same day, no photo is needed for the passport: it reuses the DNI image. The same 32 x 26 mm specification applies to the DNI itself.
How recent must the photo be?
The rule says recent without publishing a month figure, so we do not invent one — keep it current.
Can I upload the photo somewhere?
No. Spanish passports are issued in person at National Police documentation offices and the photo is handed in with the application. What we produce is a correctly sized file for printing on good photographic paper.

Our own assumptions

  • Spain publishes these requirements in Spanish. The rules above are our English rendering; the original is kept verbatim in our source record, and that original is what governs.
  • The official wording is “32 x 26 mm” — height by width, the Spanish convention. At 26 mm wide this is the smallest print we produce; start from a sharp original.
  • No head-height figure and no month figure for “recent” are published, so we do not invent them; the 68% head proportion is our choice, sized so the facial features stay large on the small frame.
  • There is no digital submission channel — the photo is handed in at the National Police office, and none is needed at all if you obtained or renewed your DNI the same day.
  • The chin is measured by 68-point facial landmarks; the crown comes from the top of the cut-out outline. Assumed accuracy ±5%, calibrated only on synthetic fixtures.
Where the authority does not specify something, we say so rather than pretending it does. The points above are our engineering choices, not official requirements.
