Head and shoulders in frame, with clear space above the hair — the head should fill about half the photo, not all of it.

This document needs a wider shot: include your chest, not just head and shoulders — the head can fill at most 60% of the photo height.

Questions

What are the photo requirements for a Malaysia Employment Pass?
For the ESD online application: exactly 99 x 142 pixels, JPG or JPEG only, less than 20 KB, against a light blue background — full-face view, neutral expression, both eyes open, mouth closed, in dark-coloured clothing covering the shoulders and chest.
Which passes does this specification cover?
The ESD system covers the Employment Pass, Dependant Pass, Long-Term Social Visit Pass, Social Visit Pass (Temporary Employment) and Professional Visit Pass — the photo requirement is part of its online application module.
Does the background really have to be light blue?
Yes — the official requirement says light blue only. This is the opposite of most photo specs: a white background, which almost every passport wants, fails here. Our check enforces the blue tint rather than letting a white photo through.
Is this the same as the Malaysian passport photo?
No. The Malaysian passport photo is 35 x 50 mm printed with a shadowless white background. The ESD pass photo is a tiny 99 x 142 pixel digital file with a light blue background. Same department, different document, different rules — do not reuse one for the other.
Why is the file so small?
The portal enforces 99 x 142 pixels and under 20 KB, so that is exactly what we output. Start from a sharp, well-lit original — at this size every pixel counts.
Can I wear a head covering?
Only if worn for religious purposes, and then the full face must remain visible and the covering must not cast any shadow on the face. Otherwise nothing may obscure the hair or hairline.

Our own assumptions

  • ⚠️ This is the specification for Malaysia's expatriate passes through the ESD system — it is completely different from the Malaysian passport photo (35 x 50 mm, white background). Same department, different document, different rules.
  • The 99 x 142 px canvas is the smallest we produce. Start from a sharp, well-lit original — at this size every pixel counts, and our usual minimum-input check still applies.
  • ESD publishes no head-height figure and no recency figure, so the 60% head proportion is our own choice and we do not invent a month count.
  • Light blue is the only accepted background colour, and our check enforces the blue tint — a white or grey background fails rather than passing by being merely neutral. ESD publishes no exact colour value, so our acceptance band is our engineering reading of “light blue”.
  • The chin is measured by 68-point facial landmarks; the crown comes from the top of the cut-out outline. Assumed accuracy ±5%, calibrated only on synthetic fixtures.
Where the authority does not specify something, we say so rather than pretending it does. The points above are our engineering choices, not official requirements.
