Head and shoulders in frame, with clear space above the hair — the head should fill about half the photo, not all of it.
This document needs a wider shot: include your chest, not just head and shoulders — the head can fill at most 55% of the photo height.

Full rules
- 35 mm x 50 mm with a shadowless white background.
- The face must measure 25–30 mm — 50% to 60% of the photo space according to ICAO guidelines.
- At Immigration offices inside Malaysia, photos are taken with a Facial Live Capture device — you do not bring a photo. Printed photos are for applications at Malaysian missions abroad and for children under 4.
- Contact lenses and spectacles are not permitted, and eyes must be open with the mouth closed.
- No hats or headwear; hair must not cover the face, and the forehead must not be covered for those wearing a hijab. Head coverings worn daily for religious purposes must not obscure the hair line or cast shadows.
- Ears and eyebrows must be fully visible and hair must not cover the forehead.
- Dark-coloured clothing covering the shoulders and chest.
- No dangling earrings, hair accessories, eyelash extensions, necklaces or other accessories.
- Ensure sufficient space above the head — do not crop too closely to the hairline.
- Photographs must be recent and of good quality (not blurry) — no month figure is published.
- Missions localise the format: the Consulate General in Los Angeles, for example, asks for three identical U.S. passport-sized 2 x 2 inch prints meeting the same visual rules. Check the mission where you will apply.

What are the Malaysian passport photo requirements?
35 mm x 50 mm with a shadowless white background, the face measuring 25–30 mm (50% to 60% of the photo space according to ICAO guidelines), full-face view with a neutral expression, both eyes open, mouth closed, no glasses or contact lenses, and dark-coloured clothing covering the shoulders and chest.
Do I need a photo if I apply inside Malaysia?
Usually not — Immigration offices in Malaysia take your photo at the counter with a Facial Live Capture device. Printed photos are needed for applications at Malaysian missions abroad and for children under 4.
Is the Malaysian passport photo the same size as other passports?
No. 35 x 50 mm is a 7:10 shape used by no other document we cover — not 35 x 45 mm, not 2 x 2 inches. A photo sized for another document will not fit.
Why does my embassy ask for a different size?
Missions localise the format. The Consulate General in Los Angeles, for example, officially asks for three identical 2 x 2 inch US-size prints that follow the same visual rules. Check the instructions of the mission where you will apply — and if it wants 2 x 2 inches, use our US-format line instead.
Can I wear glasses or jewellery?
No. Glasses and contact lenses are not permitted, and neither are dangling earrings, hair accessories, eyelash extensions or necklaces. Ears and eyebrows must be fully visible and hair must not cover the forehead.
How recent must the photo be?
The official wording is simply a recent, good-quality photograph — no month figure is published, so we do not invent one.
Our own assumptions
- Inside Malaysia, passport photos are captured live at the counter — a printed photo is only needed for applications at Malaysian missions abroad and for children under 4, which is where this specification applies.
- ⚠️ Missions localise the physical format: Los Angeles officially asks for 2 x 2 inch US-size prints while the Immigration Department's reference is 35 x 50 mm. We lay out to the 35 x 50 mm national reference; confirm the format with the mission where you will apply.
- No recency figure is published — the requirement is simply a recent photograph.
- The Immigration Department publishes no digital upload channel or file-size limits for passport photos, so what we produce is a correctly sized file for you to have printed.
- The chin is measured by 68-point facial landmarks; the crown comes from the top of the cut-out outline. Assumed accuracy ±5%, calibrated only on synthetic fixtures.
Where the authority does not specify something, we say so rather than pretending it does. The points above are our engineering choices, not official requirements.
