- The photo you upload with an online application is printed on the passport itself — it is the finished product, not a reference copy.
- Newly taken — no more than 6 months old.
- Width to height ratio of 4 x 6.
- The face occupies about 75% of the photo area.
- The height from the eyes up to the top edge is approximately two-thirds of the height from the eyes down to the bottom edge — putting the eyes about 60% of the way up the photo.
- Face looking straight ahead with both ears showing, head bare, and no tinted glasses.
- White background.
- Minimum resolution 300 dpi.
- Online uploads must be in JPEG 2000 file format, and uploaded photos are automatically checked by software — read any error message carefully and follow its instructions.

What are the Vietnamese passport photo requirements?
A newly taken photo no more than 6 months old, 4 x 6 ratio, white background, face looking straight ahead with both ears showing, head bare, no tinted glasses, the face occupying about 75% of the photo area, and a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
Where do the eyes have to be?
Vietnam publishes an official eye position — one of the few authorities that do: the height from your eyes up to the top edge must be approximately two-thirds of the height from your eyes down to the bottom edge, which puts the eyes about 60% of the way up the photo. We lay out and check against exactly that.
Is the uploaded photo really printed on the passport?
Yes — the Ministry's own guidance says the photo you use when registering the application is printed on the passport. That is why the geometry matters: what you upload is the finished product.
What file format does the online portal need?
The official standard says JPEG 2000. Your download includes a .jp2 file encoded for the online portal and the same photo as a high-quality JPEG, ready to print at 4 x 6 cm for a paper application. The portal checks uploads automatically, so if it reports a problem, follow its message.
Why did my online upload get rejected?
The portal checks photos automatically. Common failures are edited or beautified photos, glasses glare, ears hidden by hair, and faces that are too small in the frame. Read the error message the portal gives you and follow its instructions.
Does Vietnam publish a head height in millimetres?
No — it publishes a face-area proportion (about 75% of the photo area) and the eye position. The 70% head height we lay out is derived so the eyes land at the official position; it is our choice, not an official head-height figure.
Our own assumptions
- The Ministry publishes this standard in Vietnamese only. The rules above are our English rendering; the original Vietnamese is kept verbatim in our source record, and that original is what governs.
- The online portal requires JPEG 2000. We deliver both: a .jp2 file encoded with OpenJPEG for the upload, and the same photo as a JPEG for printing at 4 x 6 cm. The .jp2 carries no dpi tag — at 800 × 1200 px it is 508 dpi on a 4 × 6 cm photo, above the official 300 dpi minimum — and the portal's automatic check has the final say.
- Vietnam publishes a face-area proportion (about 75% of the photo area), not a chin-to-crown height. Our 70% head-height layout is derived so that the eyes land at the official position — about 60% up the photo — and it is our choice, not an official head-height figure.
- The official eye-position rule says approximately two-thirds; the 55–65% acceptance band we check against is our engineering tolerance around the official 60% point.
- The chin is measured by 68-point facial landmarks; the crown comes from the top of the cut-out outline. Assumed accuracy ±5%, calibrated only on synthetic fixtures.
Where the authority does not specify something, we say so rather than pretending it does. The points above are our engineering choices, not official requirements.
